Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What do I need before starting or booking driving lessons?
Currently in the UK you have to be 17 years of age to obtain a provisional licence to drive a car or ride a motorcycle - unless in receipt of a full disability allowance, when you can obtain a provisional licence at the age of 16 years. You must be in possession of a provisional driving licence before you can start taking lessons.
Can I start driving lessons before passing my theory test?
Yes, of course! You can prepare for both your theory and practical test at the same time. You must however pass your theory and hazard perception test before you are allowed to attempt your practical test.
How many driving lessons will I need?
It is impossible to give a firm number to the amount of lessons that a learner will need without first seeing how they learn and take things in. Everyone learns to drive at a rate that suits themselves. The best way to find out how many lessons you'll need is to get in the car and give it a go!
Can I have more than one lesson per week?
Yes, of course you can! You can pre-book your driving lessons for how many times a week you want. I offer intensive driving courses which give you the opportunity to have a driving lesson once a day if you would like. Usually students book their next session at the end of each lesson, allowing you to fit the driving tuition around your weekly schedule.
Are there any any other pupils in the car as well as me?
No, never. I understand that an extra pair of judging eyes helps no-one's driving ability, especially not a learner driver's. This is why I will always, before picking any-one else up, drop off the last pupil in the car.
Can I do driving lessons longer than one hour?
Of course! I recommend pupils take one and a half hour driving lessons as this not only improves on their driving ability but also concentration needed for the actual driving test as well. I also usually encourage first-time drivers to have two hour lessons when starting off as this provides more time to go through the car and how things work on the road.
Can I be picked up and dropped off in a different place?
Yes. I've found that over recent years this is what the normal has become. Many college students now request that I pick them up at the end of their day from college, we do the lesson, and then I drop them off at home. This not only is better as most of the time, working locations/ colleges are closer to the recognised driving routes, but it also saves on any bus fares that would have to be paid.
Do you offer the 'Pass Plus' course?
Yes I do. This is a course that can only be undertaken once you have passed your driving test. A minimum of six hours driving must be completed before a pass plus certificate can be issued. Tuition will be done across a range of different driving areas. For more information please see the pass plus page online.
