Advice for overcoming driving test fears
Okay, so I know how nerve-wracking exams are at the best of times. We've all had experience of exams at some point in our life, yet driving exams somehow can feel like the scariest type of them all. But why? There's no real reason for this to be the case; you know what's going to come, and what you're required to do.
I feel what scares pupils the most is that someone (i.e. the examiner) is judging and watching your every move within that car. And, in all honesty, it would even make me feel self-concious. Try and overcome test nerves with the following driving tips:
1) Drive exactly like you would drive on a lesson
Don't attempt to change your driving style just for the examiner. I would have told you of anything illegal you would have been doing that the examiners look for during our lessons. Effectively, you can treat the driving test as just another lesson.
2) Be confident
Keep reminding yourself that I wouldn't have put you through to do your test if you weren't ready. The fact I've put you through for your driving test means you're a safe, responsible driver. Show the examiner what you show me week in, week out and you'll pass your test; it's that easy!
3) Breathe deeply
Believe it or not, breathing exercises can actually work. If you're the type of person that easily gets in to moments of panic, calm yourself, breathe slowly and count to ten.
4) Visualise
Picture yourself walking out of the test centre with a great big smile on your face! Top sports stars use visualisation and mental rehersal all the time, why can't you? I'd recommend going through the manoeuvres in your head on the day of your test. Sub-conciously, your muscles get reinforced nerve signals - this is a good thing.
5) Avoid caffeine
It's common knowledge that caffeine raises attention levels, yet not many people know it also raises anxiety levels. Avoid caffeine on the day and possibly day before of your test, just in case.
