Your theory test

Your theory test comprimises of two sections: a multiple-choice section and a hazard of perception section. You need to pass both parts in order to pass your theory test.

Once you've passed your theory test you should be sure to take your practical test soonafter. This is because your theory test pass certificate runs out after two years.

The multiple-choice section

There's no real need to worry about memorising any of this information as before your test you'll be given instructions on how it works. You can even do a practice session before the real test begins so you get used to the layout of the rest.

At the start of the test, a question will appear on the screen. It's multiple-choice and you have to select the correct answer. You can navigate freely between questions and flag any questions you're not sure on to come back later.

You will have to take part in case-study based questions as well. You'll be a given a short story to read and you'll then have to answer five questions on that case-study.

You're allowed a maxiumum of 57 minutes on this section (many students take a lot less time), and need to get a minimum of 43 marks out of 50 to pass.

The hazard perception section

In the hazard perception part of the theory test you will be shown a series of short video clips on a screen. The clips feature everyday road scenes and contain at least one developing hazard. You should act by pressing the mouse button the second you see a hazard developing. The earlier you see the hazard developing, the more points you receive; it's as easy as that.
